The verdict of Bombay HC on Udta Punjab vs Censor Board case is currently going on and after a brief break, the judge has again ascended the table and are revealing the observations made by them. The film, starring Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh is slated to release this week i.e. 17th June. However, a week before it’s release, it fell prey to Censor Board’s scissorhands where they demanded a total of 89 cuts in the film. This demand aggrieved the producers of Udta Punjab, who then took up the case to HC and demanded justice. A hearing took place last week on 9th and 10th June where the HC did make some practical comebacks, leaning more towards the release of Udta Punjab without any cuts. As the hearing is going on currently, here’s what the Bombay HC has observed in this case:
#Filmmakers don’t support drugs.
#Characters show facets of menace.
#No reason to delete word Punjab from sign board.
#Nothing to suggest sovereignty is questioned.
#Drugs availability highlighted.
#Downfall of a rockstar depicted.
#Cops struggling with drug menace.
#CBFC not empowered by law to censor films as the word censor is not included in the Cinematograph Act.
#Creative freedom should not be unnecessarily curbed; nobody can dictate to a filmmaker about the content of his film.
#CBFC’s powers to cut, delete or change scenes must be consistently in consonance with provisions of the constitution and supreme court order.
