Thailand – a popular destination for filmmakers

Thailand has long been known as a popular choice for filmmakers. The majority of shoots taking place here are for advertising, documentaries, music videos, TV series and movies. Everything from high grossing Bond movies to Hangover 2 and popular reality TV series like Survivor have been made in the Kingdom.

Even Bollywood loves Thailand and it has replaced Switzerland as the most popular place to shoot in. Over the past few years, several Bollywood films have been shot in Thailand such as: Kaho Na Pyar Hai, Murder, Partners, Badmash Company, Ek Ajnabee, Anjana Anjani, Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji, Pyare Mohan, Game, etc,. Even the blockbuster ‘Ready’ was shot here in early 2011.

In fact, the unit of the upcoming movie ‘Rascals” was recently in town again to complete their shoot of the title track and a scene. They shot at the Chong Nonsi BTS – BRT walkway and Dreamworld. Earlier this year too they had also shot for the movie around various locations in Bangkok and even at the Royal Cliff Resort in Pattaya.

Currently, the top location is Bangkok followed by Chon Buri, Samut Prakan, Phuket, Pathum Thani, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi and Phangnga.

Meanwhile, the countries that frequently use Thailand for location shots include Japan, South Korea, India and the United States as well as many European countries.

Now with a US$650-million Movie Town project scheduled to open in Chiang Mai 2012, Thailand may soon become Hollywood’s favorite supporting actor!
